Union Theatre Company has announced that it will conclude its inaugural season with Pride and Prejudice by Kate Hamill, adapted from Jane Austen’s beloved novel, at Norton Park in Edinburgh.
The production will run on selected dates from 17 to 28 November 2026, bringing Hamill’s energetic and contemporary take on Austen’s enduring story to audiences in the capital.
Set in Regency England, the play follows the Bennet family, whose future is threatened by inheritance laws that dictate their estate must pass to a male heir. While Mrs Bennet seeks advantageous marriages for her daughters, the fiercely independent Lizzy Bennet has no intention of following the expected path.
Her determination is challenged, however, when the wealthy and infuriating Mr Darcy arrives in Hertfordshire alongside his friend, Mr Bingley, setting the stage for one of literature’s most celebrated romances.
Described as bold, surprising and boisterous, Hamill’s adaptation places the satire and wit of Austen’s original novel at its heart. First premiered at Primary Stages and Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival in New York in 2017, the production went on to receive critical acclaim and was named one of the year’s best theatre pieces by both The Wall Street Journal and Huffington Post.
Hamill has become one of America’s most-produced playwrights, creating acclaimed adaptations of classic works including Sense and Sensibility, Little Women, Dracula (a feminist revenge fantasy) and The Scarlet Letter.
Union Theatre’s production of Pride and Prejudice will be directed by Hannah Fitzpatrick and performed at Norton Park in Edinburgh’s Leith neighbourhood.
