The 2016 production of Hairspray, featuring Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson, will be made available to UK audiences for free for 48 hours via Universal’s The Shows Must Go On YouTube channel.

Last week, Universal confirmed that beloved musical productions would continue to run via the channel, with The Sound of Musical streaming last weekend following the initial Andrew Lloyd Webber series of shows. To date, millions of musical theatre fans around the globe have tuned in and donated hundreds of thousands of pounds to charity, whilst watching and singing-a-long at home.

Hairspray will launch this Friday at 7.00pm and be available to UK audiences for 48 hours. The show features an all-star cast that includes Maddie Baillio, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, Martin Short and Billy Eichner.

Alongside Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson, Hairspray also stars Maddie Baillio, Billy Eichner, Jennifer Hudson, Martin Short, Dove Cameron, Harvey Fierstein and Kristin Chenowith.

Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, “Hairspray Live!” takes place in 1962 Baltimore. Plump teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on “The Corny Collins Show,” a local TV program. When against all odds Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and meets a colourful array of characters, including the resident dreamboat, Link; the ambitious mean girl, Amber; an African-American boy she meets in detention, Seaweed; and his mother, Motormouth Maybelle, the owner of a local record store. Tracy’s mother is the indomitable Edna, and she eventually encourages Tracy on her campaign to integrate the all-white “Corny Collins Show.”
