Broadway’s finest gathered at Radio City Music Hall last night for the 78th Tony Awards, with Cynthia Erivo hosting for the first time. The ceremony was a lively mix of celebration, surprises, and standout performances.
Maybe Happy Ending dominated the night, collecting six Tonys including Best Musical. Darren Criss won Best Leading Actor in a Musical, and the show’s creators, Will Aronson and Hue Park, were recognised for Best Book and Score. Purpose took home Best Play, making Branden Jacobs-Jenkins a back-to-back Tony winner.
Nicole Scherzinger’s Broadway debut in Sunset Blvd. earned her Best Leading Actress in a Musical, while Sarah Snook won Best Leading Actress in a Play for The Picture of Dorian Gray. Cole Escola’s win for Oh, Mary! marked a milestone as the first non-binary performer to win Best Leading Actor in a Play.
From the UK, Jak Malone took home Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for their performance in Operation Mincemeat which recently transferred across the pond.
The red carpet was buzzing, and the show featured energetic performances from all Best Musical nominees. The original Hamilton cast’s reunion was a highlight, and the ‘In Memoriam’ segment honouring Harvey Fierstein added a moving touch.
Technical achievements were celebrated with wins for Stranger Things: The First Shadow and Sunset Blvd. in design categories, and Paul Tazewell for Death Becomes Her costumes. Michael Arden and Sam Pinkleton were recognised for their direction, reflecting Broadway’s evolving creative landscape.
