Ben Platt will make his Menier stage debut this summer in the UK premiere of Midnight at the Never Get, featuring book, music and lyrics by Golden Globe and Grammy Award winner Mark Sonnenblick.
The production will run at the Menier Chocolate Factory from 11 July to 12 September, with previews from 11 July, and will be directed by Drama Desk and Tony Award winner David Cromer.
Mark Sonnenblick said today, “This show means a tremendous amount to me and it’s a gift to collaborate with Ben again – he’s a once-in-a-generation performer. I can’t wait for audiences to experience his performance in the beautifully intimate theatre at the Menier. It’s also a huge privilege to work with the brilliant David Cromer as we realise the piece afresh for its UK premiere.”
Ben Platt added, “I’m thrilled to be undertaking my first full run on the London stage at the Menier as it transforms into the nightclub setting of The Never Get. It’s truly wonderful to work with Mark, who is not only a genius songwriter, but who has also become a true friend. It’s a very special piece, my first wholly original musical since Dear Evan Hansen, and we look forward to working with the generationally talented David Cromer to create this singular experience.”
Set in 1965 New York City, the musical follows Trevor Copeland and Arthur Brightman, whose romance is illegal at the time.
In their secret nightclub act, Midnight, the pair perform love songs in defiance of a society that demands they remain hidden.
As a historic movement begins, Trevor and Arthur find themselves torn between concealment and the risks of visibility.
The show is conceived by Sam Bolen, Max Friedman and Mark Sonnenblick, with set design by Scott Pask. Further casting is to be announced.
Priority booking for supporters of the Menier Chocolate Factory opens on 2 March, with public booking opening on 11 March.
