Greenwich Theatre has announced two powerful additions to its 2025 programme: Blue/Orange by Joe Penhall and TWO by Jim Cartwright.

These critically acclaimed plays promise audiences a compelling blend of psychological drama and intimate storytelling, reinforcing the theatre’s commitment to bold, thought-provoking work.

Blue/Orange, an award-winning play by Joe Penhall, is set in a psychiatric hospital within the British healthcare system. It follows a young Black patient who believes he is the son of an African dictator, and the two psychiatrists who treat him.

The play explores themes of race, mental health, and institutional power, using sharp dialogue and psychological tension to highlight systemic inequalities that remain relevant today.

“TWO* will be staged in Greenwich Theatre’s bar space this August, echoing the play’s setting in a northern pub. Written by Jim Cartwright, the play presents a series of vignettes featuring a married couple who run the pub and the colourful characters who pass through.

Cartwright’s signature blend of humour and pathos shines through in this intimate portrayal of love, loneliness, and longing.

Artistic Director James Haddrell said, “When I saw Blue/Orange in 2000 it blew me away. It offers three astonishing roles for its cast, and a story which really proves how potent theatre can be in challenging society and how we care for one another.

“Likewise, the prospect of staging TWO in the bar at Greenwich Theatre is an exciting one for me, immersing the audience in the lives, the struggles and the hopes of these unforgettable characters.”

The announcement comes alongside news that the musical Murder Ballad has been postponed until 2026, with the theatre citing enhanced potential for the production in the following year.
