The cast and creative team have been revealed for the major new adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s psychological thriller Don’t Look Now, co-produced by New Wolsey Theatre and Salisbury Playhouse.

Directed by New Wolsey Theatre’s Chief Executive and Artistic Director Douglas Rintoul, this bold reimagining by award-winning playwright Nell Leyshon brings fresh psychological depth and contemporary relevance to the classic story.

Originally written as a short story in 1971, Don’t Look Now was famously adapted into a film and first staged in 2007. This new version, created with permission from the du Maurier estate, addresses outdated portrayals, particularly around disability, and reimagines the narrative for a 21st-century audience.

The cast includes Alex Bulmer, Olivia Carruthers, Richard Emerson Gould, Mark Jackson, Alexander Makar, Kate Męczyńska and Sophie Robinson.

Alex Bulmer (Sister 2) is an award-winning blind artist with over 35 years of experience across Canada and the UK. She said, “I’m honoured to be part of a production that challenges stereotypes and brings disability into the centre of storytelling.”

Olivia Carruthers (Sister 1) brings a wealth of stage and screen experience, including roles in Killing Eve, Emmerdale, and The Secret Garden.

Richard Emerson Gould (Police Chief and Musician) has performed in Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Mark Jackson (John) is known for his role in The Orville and stage credits including War Horse and Noises Off.

Alexander Makar (Waiter, Restaurant Proprietor, Policeman) recently completed his MFA at LAMDA and has appeared in You Bury Me and Primary Playwright.

Kate Męczyńska (Clerk) is a Polish actress working on socially progressive theatre projects and has appeared in Barbie, Fantastic Beasts, and The Witcher: Blood Origin.

Sophie Robinson (Laura) has starred in Yerma, Miss Julie, and Juno and the Paycock, with TV credits including Hope Street and Rebellion.

The creative team includes Lighting Designer Jessie Addinall, Set & Costume Designer Jess Curtis, Video Designer Daniel Denton, Voice Coach Charmian Hoare, Fight & Intimacy Director Haruka Kuroda, and Sound Designer Adrienne Quartly.

Set in a hauntingly atmospheric Venice, Don’t Look Now follows a grieving couple seeking solace in the city’s shadowed canals. As eerie visions blur the line between the living and the dead, a sinister force begins to close in.

Douglas Rintoul said: “We’re thrilled to announce the exceptional cast and creative team for our new stage adaptation of Don’t Look Now by the wonderful Nell Leyshon. Collaborations like these allow us to take creative risks, tell bold stories and reach wider audiences.”

Gareth Machin, Artistic Director of Salisbury Playhouse, added: “Bringing this classic story to the contemporary stage with a compelling new dramatic version is hugely exciting. We’re delighted to be working with Nell Leyshon and our friends at New Wolsey Theatre.”

Don’t Look Now runs at New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich from 9 – 25 October 2025, and at Salisbury Playhouse from 29 October – 15 November 2025.
