The Off-Broadway hit Disenchanted! arrives at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2026, bringing its sharp, musical comedy twist on classic fairy tales to The Pentland Theatre at Pleasance at EICC. Created by Dennis T. Giacino and Fiely Matias, the show has become a global sensation.

Having toured extensively and entertained audiences across five continents, Disenchanted! offers a bold reimagining of well-known princesses, delivering humour, attitude and unforgettable showtunes in equal measure.

Disenchanted! runs from 5 to 30 August 2026 (excluding 12 and 19 August) at The Pentland Theatre, Pleasance at EICC. Tickets are available here.

You’re the writers and co-creators of Disenchanted! at The Pentland Theatre at Pleasance at EICC, what can you tell us about the show?

Disenchanted! features a whole slew of original fairy tale princesses who have had it up to their crowns with being portrayed as helpless damsels in distress in today’s pop culture.

Tonight, these royal renegades magic themselves to life to belt out the truth about happily ever after.

Empowered to tell their own stories, the princesses serve up the unsweetened tea as they bippity-boppity bust out a riotous tea party of their own.

The show began at the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival in Florida and has since been performed around the globe in over 15 countries, across five continents and in five languages.

It enjoyed a successful Off-Broadway run in New York, earning Best Musical nominations from the Outer Critics Circle and the Off Broadway Alliance, and continues to tour internationally, with a UK tour planned for 2027.

Disenchanted! has now been seen across the world for two decades, how has the show evolved since its original Off-Broadway debut?*

Dis! — as the show is affectionately known — often changes with the times, adding new pop culture references each year.

The comedy is constantly updated, with tweaks to the script and lyrics based on what’s happening in today’s world.

We are pop culture fanatics and love adding new comedic moments, songs and dialogue to keep the show fresh and relevant.

Even the setting has shifted over time to keep the material accessible and up to date for audiences.

The show flips classic fairy tale narratives on their head, what inspired you to reimagine these well-known characters in such a bold and comedic way?

As comedic musical theatre writers, we have always enjoyed lampooning and skewering the entertainment industry and pop culture.

While touring another show, we began discussing the fairy tales we grew up with, especially the princess stories that perpetuated misogyny and unrealistic expectations of women.

That led to a simple question: what if these princesses could tell the unvarnished truth about happily ever after?

We imagined them as bold, fabulous and unapologetically outspoken.

The musical brings together strong, hilarious princesses reclaiming their narratives, challenging outdated ideas and taking back their power from the stories that defined them.

You both have strong roots in Fringe festivals, how does it feel to be bringing Disenchanted! to Edinburgh Fringe, often considered the “home” of this kind of work?

Dream come true.

We are Fringe fanatics and have performed at more than 20 Fringes around the world.

We love the energy, creativity and passion that Fringe festivals bring, and it is where we first found our artistic voice.

The Fringe feels like home to us, and we cannot wait to bring our princesses to what we see as the Mother of All Fringes.

With such a distinctive mix of musical comedy, satire and storytelling, what do you hope audiences take away from Disenchanted! today?

We hope audiences leave tapping their toes, humming the tunes and laughing so hard that it opens their hearts to the messages beneath the comedy.

The princesses bring their stories into the present in a way that is both funny and meaningful.

We hope audiences share these updated perspectives and that the show contributes to a world where princesses are funny, empowered and anything but damsels in distress.

What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see Disenchanted!?

The Fringe is a theatrical buffet of wonderfully diverse shows.

Our musical is a no-holds-barred, raucous comedy featuring a smart, witty, talented and diverse cast of belting divas.

Book that ticket now and discover the magic of riotous royals kicking their tiaras to the curb while celebrating breaking the glass ceiling — and slipper.
