A bold and darkly comic new show, Friendliest makes its Edinburgh Fringe debut as acclaimed American comedian Drew Lausch blends stand-up with deeply personal storytelling to explore queerness, guilt and growing up in an unaccepting environment.
Framed as a high-stakes pitch to create the world’s first gay superhero, the narrative quickly unravels into something more revealing. As the pitch collapses, Lausch is forced to confront his own past, unpacking the experiences that shaped both the hero and himself.
Drawing on his upbringing in Fargo, North Dakota, Friendliest charts a journey through first love, friendship and betrayal. It captures the tension between the simple moral binaries of comic books and the far messier reality of life, where heroism and villainy are rarely clear-cut.
Blending sharp humour with emotional honesty, the show explores themes of accountability and self-acceptance, asking what happens when you’re not the hero of your own story. Lausch describes comedy as the only way to tell these truths, creating a work that is as funny as it is deeply personal.
Friendliest runs at Gilded Balloon (The Nook) from 8 – 31 August at 18:00. Tickets are on sale hereÂ
