In Furniture Boys, writer and performer Emily Weitzman invites audiences into a surreal and inventive world where past relationships are reimagined as pieces of furniture. Blending spoken word, comedy, clowning and memoir, this unique production offers a fresh and playful take on love and loss.
Weitzman’s exes appear as armchairs, lamps and sofa-beds in a vivid metaphorical landscape, transforming personal history into an imaginative exploration of emotional attachment. What begins as absurd humour gradually reveals deeper reflections on heartbreak, memory and impermanence.
Through its inventive structure, the show examines what people hold onto, what they discard and what they attempt to repair. With a feminist lens, it draws parallels between relationships and everyday objects, suggesting that what we seek in partners mirrors the qualities we value in our surroundings: comfort, stability and resilience.
Directed by Kate Doyle, the production balances humour with emotional depth, as Weitzman sifts through the “storage room” of her past. The result is a work that is both intimate and widely relatable, capturing the complexity of connection and the desire to be understood.
Award-winning and critically acclaimed, Furniture Boys combines inventive storytelling with heartfelt reflection, offering a distinctive and memorable Fringe experience.
