Edinburgh Fringe Preview: ROOMIES at Underbelly (Jersey)

ROOMIES is a darkly funny and deeply human solo show that explores friendship, identity and survival within the confines of a treatment facility. Written and performed by Julia Stephens, the piece is based on a true story and offers a candid insight into life when everything familiar is stripped away.

The story centres on Sophie, once a glamorous Los Angeles socialite, who finds herself approaching her 30th birthday in a very different setting. Sharing a room with her 18-year-old roommate Molly, the two form an unlikely bond as they navigate a system that blurs the line between care and control.

As Sophie’s former identity begins to unravel, the play contrasts the excess and allure of her past life with the stark reality of institutional living. Through this collision of worlds, ROOMIES examines what it means to rebuild a sense of self when autonomy is lost.

Combining humour with emotional honesty, the production offers a nuanced portrayal of mental health, connection and resilience. It highlights the unexpected relationships that can emerge even in the most difficult circumstances.

ROOMIES runs at Underbelly (Jersey) from 5 – 31 August at 13:00. Tickets are on sale here
