Written by and starring Abigail Weinstock, Giraffe arrives at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as a sharply observed and deeply personal comedy about masking, misdiagnosis and self-acceptance. Drawing on her own experiences, Weinstock crafts a semi-autobiographical story that balances humour with emotional insight.
The play follows Eliana, a young woman convinced she is hiding a dark secret. After an ill-fated encounter with her neighbour leads to a restraining order, she finds herself navigating therapy groups, new living arrangements and the looming threat of exposure. With the clock ticking before a court hearing, Eliana scrambles to prove she is “normal”.
As her carefully constructed identity begins to unravel, the truth emerges: rather than being the sociopath she fears, Eliana is an undiagnosed autistic woman who has spent her life masking. The revelation reframes her experiences, offering a powerful exploration of identity and belonging.
Blending sharp comedy with poignant reflection, Giraffe examines the pressures placed on individuals to conform and the emotional toll of feeling different. It is a story that ultimately celebrates embracing difference rather than hiding from it.
Directed by Sara Aniqah Malik and produced by The Project People, the show brings together an accomplished creative team to deliver a thoughtful and engaging piece of contemporary theatre.
Giraffe runs at Pleasance Courtyard (Cellar) from 5 – 31 August at 13:45. Tickets are on sale here
