A unique blend of theatre and live art, Helen Bradley: painter and storyteller sees Fringe veteran Kara Wilson bring the celebrated Lancashire artist vividly to life on stage. In this dynamic “painter play”, Wilson recreates an entire oil painting in Bradley’s distinctive style before the audience’s eyes.
Working closely with Bradley’s family, the production draws on a rich collection of verbatim stories, as well as unpublished archival material, to explore the painter’s life and legacy. Known for her evocative depictions of Edwardian childhood and her naïve, hand-applied painting technique, Bradley’s work captured a nostalgic yet deeply personal vision of the past.
Remarkably, Bradley did not begin painting until the age of 65, yet went on to achieve international recognition. The show celebrates this late blossoming of creativity, offering both longtime admirers and newcomers an intimate portrait of an artist who found success later in life.
Wilson, herself an accomplished writer, actor and painter, reflects on a shared connection with Bradley, noting the parallels between their creative journeys. This latest production marks the sixth instalment in her acclaimed series of “painter plays”.
Bringing together storytelling, history and live performance, Helen Bradley: painter and storyteller offers a moving celebration of artistic discovery and the enduring power of creativity.
Helen Bradley: painter and storyteller runs at Pleasance Courtyard (Cellar) from 5 – 30 August at 11:20. Tickets are on sale here
