Shanghai’s pioneering musical improv collective Shanghai Encore! makes its Edinburgh Festival Fringe debut with No Script, No Net, No Regrets, a high-energy, entirely improvised musical experience.

Running at the Haldane Theatre, this international ensemble brings its unique brand of unscripted theatre to the Fringe for the first time, marking a major milestone for Shanghai’s independent performance scene. Since forming in 2022, the group has built a devoted following with its daring format, creating a brand-new musical from scratch each night.

With no script, no set storyline and no safety net, the performers rely entirely on audience inspiration to shape each show. From surreal love stories to outlandish comic scenarios, every performance is completely different, blending storytelling, music and humour in real time.

The ensemble reflects the cosmopolitan spirit of Shanghai, featuring performers from China, the United States, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. This diverse mix brings a wide range of influences, from multilingual wordplay to an eclectic musical palette spanning jazz, pop, funk and musical theatre.

Accompanied by a live musician, the cast constructs songs, choreography and narrative arcs on the spot, turning spontaneous ideas into fully realised musical moments. Whether it’s a noir-inspired mystery or an intergalactic pop opera, the unpredictability is central to the appeal.

Founder Curt Mabry praised the company’s fearless approach, highlighting the complexity of combining improvisation with live music and performance, and the level of trust required between performers to make it work.

As Shanghai Encore! brings its distinctive style to Edinburgh, No Script, No Net, No Regrets promises a fast-paced and inventive addition to this year’s Fringe, where anything can happen and no two performances will ever be the same.

No Script, No Net, No Regrets runs at the Haldane Theatre from 07 – 12 August at 18:15. Tickets are on sale here
