Edinburgh Fringe Review: Confessions of a Redheaded Coffeeshop Girl at Gilded Balloon Patter Hoose

Suzanna Rosenthal Productions presents the world premiere of ROTUS: Receptionist Of The United States, a bold new political satire written and performed by queer Irish-American comedian Leigh Douglas. Running from 30 July to 24 August at Gilded Balloon Patter Hoose (Snug), this genre-blending solo show combines stand-up, theatre, cabaret, and a dash of burlesque to deliver a fearless and funny critique of conservative politics.

The play follows Chastity Quirke, a White House receptionist and staunch Republican, as she faces a political and personal reckoning. Inspired by real-life figures such as Cassidy Hutchinson and Alyssa Farah, ROTUS explores the contradictions and moral compromises faced by young women in hardline conservative circles.

Directed by Fiona Kingwill (Really Good Exposure), with original music by viral musical comedian Sarah Hester Ross, the show is a laugh-out-loud yet thought-provoking journey from blind allegiance to reluctant self-awareness. Leigh Douglas’s performance is both hilarious and heartfelt, offering a timely reflection on complicity, identity, and the courage to confront uncomfortable truths.
