Spraywatch: A Beautiful Rescue arrives at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, offering a musical comedy that reimagines a familiar seaside drama through a distinctly British lens.
Written, composed and directed by Hywel Evans, the show follows a glamorous American lifeguard who finds herself stranded in a struggling English coastal town. Determined to return home, she sets out to transform the local lifeguard team and restore the town’s reputation.
Set to a score inspired by 80s and 90s pop rock, the production blends parody with original storytelling, exploring ambition, identity and appearances beneath its comic surface. As events unfold, it becomes clear that the seaside setting holds darker secrets, challenging the protagonist’s expectations.
Evans said, “I wanted to explore ideas of perfection relevant today but ultimately leave the audience with… happiness.”
Spraywatch: A Beautiful Rescue runs at theSpace @ Niddry from 07 – 15 August at 21:45 and 17 – 29 August at 19:30. Tickets are on sale here
