Edinburgh Fringe Review: Jackie!!! at Gilded Balloon Patter House (Big Yin)

In Jackie!!!, the pillbox hat is firmly in place, but the narrative underneath is anything but traditional. This new musical, presented by Blair Russell Productions at the Gilded Balloon Patter House, offers a bold, satirical take on the life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. What begins as a seemingly straightforward biographical retelling quickly veers into surreal and comedic territory, blending historical drama with absurdist flair.

The show charts Jackie’s journey from debutante to First Lady, through her marriage to JFK and later to Aristotle Onassis. But rather than a reverent homage, Jackie!!! leans into the chaos of Camelot, exposing the darker undercurrents of power, manipulation and legacy that defined the Kennedy dynasty. The tone is irreverent and sharp, with a script that isn’t afraid to poke fun at American myth-making.

The musical numbers are a highlight, particularly the infectious title song. There’s a vibrant energy to the score, and while not every number lands with equal impact, the overall effect is one of spirited theatricality. Cameos from cultural icons like Liberace, Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe add a playful, if slightly camp, layer to the proceedings.

The cast are uniformly strong, with most taking on multiple roles. The actor portraying JFK deserves special mention for a performance that captures the president’s voice and mannerisms with uncanny precision. Jackie herself is portrayed with poise and complexity, navigating the shifting tones of the piece with grace. Her wardrobe is another standout: each outfit feels meticulously researched and authentically styled, adding visual richness to the production.

However, the show isn’t without its flaws. Some transitions between scenes feel clunky, disrupting the otherwise brisk pace. The tonal shifts, while ambitious, occasionally jar rather than gel, leaving the audience unsure whether to laugh, reflect or recoil. Still, the ambition is admirable, and the creative team clearly have a strong vision.

Developed by Joe McNeice, Max Alexander-Taylor and Nancy Edwards, Jackie!!! is a work in progress with clear potential. With some tightening and polish, it could evolve into a cult favourite. As it stands, it’s a fun, fast-paced hour that offers a fresh perspective on a familiar figure.
