Edinburgh Preview: Evelyn Mok: Bubble Butt at Pleasance Courtyard

Critically acclaimed stand up Evelyn Mok returns to the Edinburgh festival for the second time with her much anticipated new hour ‘Bubble Butt’, directed by Paul Byrne.  Her first,  ‘Hymen Manoeuvre’, won her ‘Best Comedy Newcomer’ at The Pleasance’s Indie Awards and she recently did a sold out run at London’s Soho Theatre with the show.

Born in Sweden to a father from Hong Kong and a Chinese mother (who was born and raised in India), Mok challenges pre-disposed stereotypes with an unapologetic style and sharp-witted hilarity.  ‘Bubble Butt’ will explore the role of being an immigrant’s child and the expectations you feel you have on you, but also being receptive to your parents’ own struggles.

As a woman of colour in the western, predominantly white world, and growing up in the margins between cultures, she learnt to have an understanding of her parents culture and for the culture of the country she grew up in. However, she never really fit into any of them, finding herself as a constant “translator” and chameleon of cultures. She feels like a third culture kid creating her own cultural mix between the two she grew up in but with an addition of her own experiences within in it.

She also talks about everything that has happened in the past year of #MeToo, the refugee crisis and Trump.  She is feeling the paradigm shift and trying to figure out what her role is in the world.   What responsibilities does she have?  Is she to blame or can she blame others for the things she has experienced in her life?  She also talks about losing weight and overcoming fat shaming.

TV wise Evelyn has appeared on the Chris Ramsey’s Stand Up Central for Comedy Central and was recently a guest on Nick Helm’s Eat Your Heart Out for Dave. A seasoned live-act, she performs stand-up comedy across the UK and Europe, most recently supporting Josie Long and Paul Foot on their European tours.
