Edinburgh Review: KAREN at Underbelly, Cowgate

It’s a boy meets girl story, with a melodic twist. Regional Finalist for the BBC New Comedy Awards and Finalist for Musical Comedy Awards, Jamie Finn blends storytelling, comedy and original music to explore this story of dizzying romance and the tragedy of friendship.

After socially awkward Jamie is dumped for a man that goes to the gym, spin instructor and rock-n roll powerhouse, Lily takes him in. He spends the next five years learning how to move forward, on a bike that doesn’t move. Sometimes it feels like everything has changed, even when you’re still exactly where you started. What do you do when your friend breaks up with you?

Everyone knows the steps to get over romantic heartbreak, the formula codified throughout popular culture: watch the films, listen to the music, read the books, eat the cartons of ice cream. Pop culture is not always a proper primer for all the facets of different kinds of love. Sometimes the loss of a friend is more agonising than the loss of a romantic partner. So many have felt the weight of separating from a friend, but no one talks about how to get over
friendship break-ups. This is a story of how to mourn more than one kind of relationship. Nobody’s Talking About Jamie celebrates the wilderness of platonic love.

Jamie Finn comments, I wanted to write a show about platonic love. I have, over the years, had so many deep friendships with women and this show is a love letter of sorts to all of them. I’ve experienced friendship break-ups and felt the grief. I wanted to write a piece which explored that heartbreak and the co-dependency of those relationships.
