Five Star Review from Theatre WeeklyGinger Johnson Blows Off! at Beyond in Pleasance Courtyard is a daring and raucous spectacle that expertly blends drag, daredevil stunts, and razor-sharp humour, leaving the audience howling with laughter and utterly captivated. Fresh from her triumph on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, Series 5, Johnson brings her multifaceted talents to the Fringe this year, proving why she’s a drag superstar.

The show is a whirlwind of high-energy entertainment, with Johnson fearlessly tackling a succession of ‘death-defying’ stunts that build to a hilarious climax—her attempt to launch herself from a cannon. After snatching the crown, this show is another dream come true for Johnson. From the outset, she had the crowd in the palm of her hand, her dynamic stage presence and impeccable timing ensuring every joke landed with precision. The mix of fart gags and vainglorious quips kept the laughter rolling, punctuated by the catchphrase “bit more” whenever Johnson felt the applause could be louder—a testament to her well-honed skills from years in the drag scene.

A notable aspect of the performance was Johnson’s interaction with her safety assistant, Jen. With a deadpan expression described as resembling a “wet floor sign,” Jen’s monosyllabic and unenthusiastic demeanour perfectly contrasted Johnson’s frantic energy, adding an extra layer of comedy that enriched the show.

The musical numbers, “Big Shot” and “How the Fuck Did I End Up Here?” were particular highlights. Johnson’s performance of these Bourgeois & Maurice originals was comedy gold, leaving the audience in stitches and showcasing her talent for belting out a tune with a cheeky twist.

Yet amidst the laughs and wackiness, Johnson didn’t shy away from addressing serious issues. She importantly touched on the recent fascist riots in the UK, delivering a heartfelt message about the need for solidarity in these frightening times. The show concluded on a powerful note, with a collection for a local HIV charity, adding depth and purpose to what was already a stellar comedic performance. Ginger Johnson Blows Off! is not your run-of-the-mill drag show—it’s a showcase of Johnson’s immense talent, offering much-needed comic relief while remaining deeply conscious of the world around us.
