News Revue 2017 Review Edinburgh Fringe

Four Star Review from Theatre Weekly

If the 24 hour news channels read all the days big events to the tune of Beyoncé, then current affairs may not be any less awful, but they would certainly be more enjoyable to hear. News Revue takes all the major news stories and dishes them up with a big slice of song, dance and humour.

News Revue is a venerable Fringe Favourite, always returning with a new show each year, based on the events which have made the headlines in the last twelve months, so there is no shortage of material for the talented company to get to grips with for this years’ outing. Director Katie Peskin returns for her second year running and has done a great job of keeping the pace of the show just right.

Musical Director, Tom Barnes, knocks out everything from Bewitched to David Bowie while the able cast dish out the satire.  All of the big names get a roasting, unsurprisingly Theresa May, plus several of her cabinet, and Donald Trump feature heavily. But Nicola Sturgeon, Piers Morgan and Arlene Foster also make an appearance.

The cast; Howard Grater, Sam Sheldon, Abigail Simpson and Elissa Churchill, take on these countless roles in a flurry of quick costume changes and even faster impersonations.  It’s an incredibly funny show and you don’t need to be fully up to date on today’s news to understand what’s going on, as long as you know about Brexit, and that there was an election, you’re half way there.

If you don’t think politics and world affairs are laughable enough, News Revue will convince you that the best way to get through the day’s news is with comedy. Nicely put together and superbly performed by a talented cast who can sing, dance and do a mean politician impression.
