Reading Rep Theatre has announced the cast for its upcoming production of Educating Rita, which runs from 26 February to 21 March 2026, with a press night on 2 March.

Willy Russell’s celebrated play arrives at the venue for the first time, directed by award‑winning Annie Kershaw, who returns following her acclaimed 2025 staging of The Maids.

Madelyn Smedley, known for reaching the final six on BBC’s The Traitors, will take on the role of Rita. Julius D’Silva, whose recent credits include Singin’ in the Rain at the Royal Exchange Theatre, joins her as Frank.

The production explores themes of education, personal growth and self‑discovery, resonating strongly in today’s culture of constant affirmation.

Annie Kershaw said, “This play is life‑affirming and brilliantly funny, but it also raises interesting provocations about the choices we make in life and how class and gender affect them. It really does have all the elements. I’m excited to see what audiences make of it.”

Madelyn Smedley added, “My mum said to lead with empathy, drive and ambition which Rita has in abundance. What we can all relate to is the want for a better way of living life. Self‑belief and Rita’s desire to learn means anything is possible. I love that. Rita’s background does not define her potential. If anything it spurs her on.”

Julius D’Silva’s extensive credits span theatre and television, including roles at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Theatre Royal Haymarket, Bristol Old Vic, Shakespeare’s Globe and the RSC, as well as appearances in Bridgerton and The Crown.

The creative team includes Set and Costume Designer Cara Evans, Lighting Designer Adam Jeffery, Composer and Sound Designer Holly Khan, Speech and Dialect Coach Mary Howland, Costume Supervisor Beth Qualter Buncall, and Production Manager Jordan Harris, with casting by Jill Green Casting.
