Final casting has been announced for Double Indemnity, a thrilling new stage adaptation of James M. Cain’s iconic crime novel. Inspired by Billy Wilder’s legendary film noir masterpiece, the production opens at Eastbourne’s Devonshire Park Theatre on 5 February before touring major venues across the UK and Ireland until May, ahead of a West End season.
Hollywood star Mischa Barton (The O.C.) leads the cast in her long-awaited UK stage debut as the ultimate femme fatale, Phyllis Nirdlinger. She is joined by Ciarán Owens as Walter Huff, Martin Marquez as Keyes, and Gillian Saker as Nettie, Waitress and Usher, who also understudies Phyllis. Joseph Langdon plays Mr. Norton, Nino and Joe Pete, Oliver Ryan takes on Mr. Nirdlinger, Jack Christholf and Jackson, and Sophia Roberts appears as Lola Nirdlinger.
Ensemble members include Simon Victor, Estelle Cousins and Patrick Fleming, who also cover key roles.
Adapted for the stage by Tom Holloway and directed by Oscar Toeman, the production features set and costume design by Ti Green, lighting design by Josh Gadsby, sound design and composition by Dan Balfour, additional composition by Zak Gavi, wig and makeup design by Jess & Jo of JJ Wigs, and movement direction by Chi-San Howard.
Set in Los Angeles during the 1930s, Double Indemnity follows Walter Huff, a sharp-eyed insurance salesman who meets the dangerously seductive Phyllis Nirdlinger. Together, they plot the perfect crime: murder her husband, cash in the policy and disappear. But passion clouds judgment, guilt corrodes even the most perfect plans, and mistrust threatens to destroy them both.
The UK and Ireland tour includes stops at Eastbourne, Nottingham, Crewe, Richmond, Brighton, Dublin, Southend, Wycombe, Bromley, Manchester and Cardiff.
Anne-Marie Woodley, Theatre Director and Head of Venues for Bill Kenwright Ltd, said, “Launching this bold new adaptation of Double Indemnity marks an exciting moment for us. With Mischa Barton leading an exceptional cast, audiences can expect a razor-sharp, atmospheric reimagining of one of the most iconic crime stories ever written.”
