The Menier Chocolate Factory has released first look production images from its major revival of Equus, directed by Lindsay Posner.

The new staging of Peter Shaffer’s acclaimed play opens at the Menier on 18 May, with previews from 8 May, and runs until 4 July before transferring to Theatre Royal Bath from 14 to 25 July.

The newly released images offer an early look at the production’s striking aesthetic and the cast in rehearsal, bringing fresh life to Shaffer’s powerful exploration of faith, psychology and obsession.

Toby Stephens leads the company as psychiatrist Martin Dysart, joined by Amanda Abbington as Hesther Salomon and Noah Valentine as Alan Strang.

They are joined by Bella Aubin, Emma Cunniffe, Paula James, Colin Mace, Ed Mitchell and David Rubin, with Luke Hodkinson, Aristide Lyons, Zach Parkin, Tommi Sutton and Moses Ward completing the ensemble.

Equus follows Dysart as he attempts to understand what drove 17-year-old Alan Strang to blind six horses, raising unsettling questions about passion, worship and the cost of normality.

The creative team includes set and costume designer Paul Farnsworth, lighting designer Paul Pyant, composer and sound designer Adam Cork and movement director James Cousins.

Widely regarded as a modern masterpiece, Shaffer’s play remains one of the most compelling psychological dramas in contemporary theatre, and these first images signal a bold new revival.
