First look production images have been released for By Royal Appointment, Daisy Goodwin’s debut play, which recently opened at the Arts Theatre Cambridge and is currently touring the UK.
The production stars Jane Asher as The Queen and Laura Main, best known for Call the Midwife, as The Dresser. They are joined by David Robb, Matthew Cottle, Laura Matthews, Jeremy Drakes and Fiona Tong.
Directed by Anthony Banks, By Royal Appointment explores the relationship between Queen Elizabeth II and her trusted dresser, examining how the late monarch’s carefully curated public image was created and maintained over decades.
The play imagines the power behind the royal wardrobe, following the working-class dresser who rises to become one of the Queen’s closest confidantes, helping shape everything from her public appearances to the messages conveyed through her clothing.
Goodwin’s play offers a humorous and poignant look behind palace doors, presenting a portrait of one of Britain’s most enduring public figures and the people who worked closest to her.
Following its opening engagement in Cambridge, the tour visits Nottingham Theatre Royal, Chelmsford Theatre, York Theatre Royal, His Majesty’s Theatre Aberdeen, Chichester Festival Theatre, Edinburgh Kings Theatre and Marlowe Theatre Canterbury.
The creative team includes director Anthony Banks, designer Jonathan Fensom, lighting designer Richard Howell, sound designer Sarah Weltman and composer Ben Ringham.
The newly released production images provide audiences with a first glimpse of the production, showcasing the royal drama ahead of its continued tour across the UK.
