First look production images have been released for The Haunting of Hill House, the new stage adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s acclaimed gothic novel, which is currently playing at Salisbury Playhouse ahead of its UK tour.
Adapted by Olivier and BAFTA Award-winning writer Stef Smith and directed by Martin Constantine, the production opened in Salisbury on 11 September and will continue touring the UK through to November.
The newly released images showcase the production’s cast, led by Jasper Britton as Dr Montague, Jemma Churchill as Mrs Montague, Sian Howard as Mrs Dudley, Sophie Lenglinger as Theo, Robin Morrissey as Luke and Clancy Ryan as Eleanor.
Based on Jackson’s landmark work of supernatural fiction, The Haunting of Hill House follows a group of investigators who enter the mysterious Hill House in search of answers, only to find themselves confronted by increasingly unsettling events that blur the line between reality and the supernatural.
The novel has long been regarded as one of the defining works of horror literature and inspired the hit Netflix series that introduced the story to a new generation of audiences.
Stef Smith said, “Shirley Jackson created one of the greatest haunted house stories ever written, and it’s an absolute honour to adapt it for the stage. I’m so excited by this cast, whose talent, sensitivity and imagination will breathe new life into these characters. I can’t wait for audiences to experience The Haunting of Hill House in a completely new way.”
The production features design by Ti Green, lighting design by Chris Davey, sound design by Johnny Edwards, composition by Harry Blake, video design by Duncan McLean, illusion design by Will Houstoun and movement direction by Georgina Lamb.
Following its Salisbury run, The Haunting of Hill House will visit Richmond Theatre, Theatr Clwyd, Theatre Royal Brighton, Palace Theatre Manchester, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, Royal Lyceum Theatre and Cambridge Arts Theatre.
