The Unicorn Theatre has announced full casting for the world premiere of Santa’s First Christmas, a new festive dance theatre production directed and choreographed by Olivier Award winner James Cousins.
Running from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, the production adapts Mac Barnett’s beloved picture book, illustrated by Sydney Smith, with a script by Rachel Bagshaw, James Cousins and Harry Blake.
The newly announced cast includes Jahmarley Bachelor as Carey/Max, Julia Costa as Max, Alex Gosmore as Polar Bear, Samantha Ho as Carey/Rita, Stephen Kirkham as Santa, Marshall Stay as Santa/Polar Bear Understudy and Imogen May Wright as Rita.
The company brings together performers whose credits span the West End, major television productions and leading contemporary dance companies.
Featuring music and lyrics by Harry Blake, Santa’s First Christmas tells the story of a Santa Claus who has spent so many years delivering Christmas magic to others that he has never had the chance to celebrate the festive season himself. Determined to change that, a group of loyal elves set out to give him the best Christmas ever.
The production marks a new collaboration between the Unicorn Theatre and Cousins, whose previous credits include Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theatre. The creative team also includes designer Eleanor Bull, lighting designer Joe Hornsby, sound designer Riwa Saab and video designer Daniel Denton.
James Cousins said: “I am so excited to be bringing Santa’s First Christmas to the Unicorn stage with this incredible group of creatives and company of performers. It’s a story with huge heart about finding those who lift you up to be the fullest version of you! Expect wonder, magic and a whole lot of joy that will leave you dancing (and roller skating!) your way into Christmas.”
Harry Blake added: “Santa’s First Christmas is a beautiful story about love and acceptance, and I’m delighted to be bringing it to life at the Unicorn this Christmas. We’ll be channelling the warmth and joy of the illustrations with catchy tunes, jazzy rhythms and a singing polar bear. The score is mainly original but if you listen carefully, you’ll spot some Christmas classics woven in!”
Suitable for ages four and above, the production opens at the Unicorn Theatre on 14 November, with a press performance scheduled for 25 November.
