Donmar Warehouse has released first look rehearsal images for The Maids, Jean Genet’s provocative classic reimagined in a bold new translation by Kip Williams.
Directed by Williams, the production stars Yerin Ha, Phia Saban and Lydia Wilson. This marks Williams’ Donmar debut following his acclaimed reimagining of The Picture of Dorian Gray, and ahead of his upcoming adaptation of Dracula starring Cynthia Erivo.
The newly released images, captured by Marc Brenner, offer a glimpse into the intense and surreal world of The Maids, where two maids ritualistically role-play their mistress’ murder until fantasy and reality begin to blur.
“My spurt of saliva is my spray of diamonds”
This new version of The Maids is described as a compelling, timely parable of modern identity and the destructive desire to both emulate and annihilate those we idolize.
The creative team includes Rosanna Vize (Set Designer), Marg Horwell (Costume Designer), Jon Clark (Lighting Designer), Dan Balfour (Sound Designer), DJ Walde (Composer), and Zakk Hein (Video Designer).
Yerin Ha’s recent credits include Lord of the Flies (Sydney Theatre Company), Dune: Prophecy, Halo, and the upcoming fourth series of Bridgerton. Phia Saban has appeared in Oedipus (Wyndham’s Theatre), House of the Dragon, and The Last Kingdom. Lydia Wilson’s extensive stage credits include The 47th (The Old Vic), Walden (Harold Pinter Theatre), and The Duchess of Malfi (Almeida Theatre). Her screen work includes Star Trek Beyond, Funny Woman, and the upcoming Disney+ series Alice and Steve.
The Maids runs at Donmar Warehouse from 13 October to 29 November 2025, with press night on Tuesday 21 October.
