The National Theatre has unveiled the first set of rehearsal images for its upcoming production of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus. The play, directed by acclaimed National Theatre Associate Lyndsey Turner, will feature David Oyelowo in the lead role as Rome’s greatest soldier turned most formidable enemy. The production will run at the Olivier Theatre from September 11 to November 9, 2024, with an official press night scheduled for September 24.
Coriolanus is a timeless tale of power, politics, and pride. Known for his unmatched prowess on the battlefield, Coriolanus returns to Rome as a celebrated hero. However, his refusal to conform to the expectations of the political class and the populace sets him on a path of conflict, ultimately threatening the city he once fought to protect.
The cast is a robust ensemble featuring talents such as Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Sam Hazeldine, Pamela Nomvete, and Jo Stone-Fewings. Additionally, the production will see four young actors sharing the role of Young Marcius: Kyron Allen, Deniro-Carter Bhola, Kaelum Nelson, and Cale Cole.
The creative team behind Coriolanus is nothing short of extraordinary. The production will feature set design by Es Devlin, known for her innovative and immersive stage designs, and costume design by Annemarie Woods. The lighting will be crafted by Tim Lutkin, with sound design by Tom Gibbons and video design by Ash J Woodward. The play’s dynamic fight scenes will be directed by Sam Lyon-Behan, while Angus MacRae composes the score that will underscore the intensity of this gripping tragedy.
For those looking to catch this monumental production, Coriolanus will offer several assisted performances, including captioned, BSL interpreted, audio-described, and relaxed performances throughout its run.
Supported by the Huo Family Foundation, this production is set to be one of the highlights of the National Theatre’s season. The National Theatre continues its mission to create powerful and engaging performances that resonate with audiences across the UK and beyond, both on its iconic stages and through its extensive touring and education programs.
