Interview: Emma Jane Goodwin on Noughts & Crosses at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre

“There has been so much research, thought and care put into this production, before the actors even turned up! Now the company is together, we’ve worked on the world we’re presenting before we even got to the text”

Malorie Blackman’s Noughts & Crosses, adapted by Dominic Cooke, returns to the London stage this summer at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. This powerful story of love, division, and hope is brought to life by a dynamic cast, including Emma Jane Goodwin as Sarah Pike.

Directed by Tinuke Craig, the production promises a fresh and moving take on a modern classic, set in the magical surroundings of one of London’s most iconic theatres.

Noughts & Crosses runs from 28 June to 26 July 2025 at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. For tickets and more information, visit openairtheatre.com

You’re starring in Noughts & Crosses at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre-what can you tell us about the show?

It’s a fresh take on a classic tale as old as time…two young people in love, and the forces beyond their control. It’s emotional, it’s political, it’s something that everyone can feel something for. It’s my first introduction to the story but younger friends, and my goddaughters Beth and Kate made me aware of what an impact this story has made as a novel since its release.

What drew you to the role of Sarah Pike, and how did you prepare to bring this character to life on stage?

Sarah is quite unusual, as she has a place in both worlds, being a Nought but working for a Cross family. It’s interesting to consider her boundaries and loyalties, and how she works as an ally to both of the main protagonists.

Noughts & Crosses is based on Malorie Blackman’s acclaimed novel, which deals with themes of division and identity. How do you approach performing in a story with such powerful social commentary?

There has been so much research, thought and care put into this production, before the actors even turned up! Now the company is together, we’ve worked on the world we’re presenting before we even got to the text, to make sure we really do it justice.

The production is directed by Tinuke Craig and features a diverse, talented cast. What has the rehearsal process been like, and how has the creative team influenced your performance?

Tinuke and the team have created such a warm and secure rehearsal room since day one. It feels completely open to any questions, and without judgement. It feels like such a collaborative piece that we’re creating, it’s really exciting to be a part of. The whole company are brilliant.

Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is a unique venue. How does performing outdoors impact your experience as an actor and the atmosphere of the show?

It’s the biggest open air theatre in the UK, and it’s absolutely gorgeous! I’ve watched shows here before, but it’s my first time on the stage. I think it’ll definitely cement us as a team to face any challenges the British weather may throw at us!

What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see Noughts & Crosses?

The Open Air Theatre is such a magical experience, with the amazing backdrop of Regent’s Park. This show will take you on a wonderful, uplifting, heartbreaking journey in a beautiful and unique setting. Come and see us!
