A first look image of Cynthia Erivo in the Sydney Theatre Company production of Dracula has been released as preview performances begin tonight at the Noël Coward Theatre.
The Tony, Grammy and Emmy winner makes her return to the stage for the first time in nearly a decade, starring in a bold one‑actor reimagining of Bram Stoker’s gothic classic. The production runs until 30 May.
Adapted and directed by Kip Williams, Dracula sees Erivo take on all twenty‑three characters from the novel. This includes Jonathan Harker, Mina Murray, Lucy Westenra and Van Helsing, as well as the infamous Count Dracula.
Producers Michael Cassel and Adam Kenwright described the production as a landmark theatrical moment for West End audiences, noting the rarity of seeing Erivo in such an intimate and demanding role.
Erivo’s return follows a period of major success across film and music, including her acclaimed performance as Elphaba in Wicked and a recent Grammy win for Defying Gravity with Ariana Grande.
Dracula completes Williams’ gothic trilogy, following The Picture of Dorian Gray and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The production blends live video, pre‑recorded film and solo performance in Williams’ signature ‘cine‑theatre’ style.
The creative team includes scenic and costume designer Marg Horwell, lighting designer Nick Schlieper, composer Clemence Williams, sound designer Jessica Dunn, video designer Craig Wilkinson and dramaturg Zahra Newman.
