First look production images are released for the 20th anniversary production of Alan Bennett’s iconic play The History Boys at Theatre Royal Bath, running from Thursday, 22 August to Saturday, 31 August 2024. This highly anticipated revival will then embark on a national tour, bringing the timeless story of ambition, education, and adolescence to audiences across the UK.
Originally premiering at the National Theatre in 2004, The History Boys quickly became a modern classic, winning over 30 major international awards and launching the careers of stars like James Corden, Dominic Cooper, and Russell Tovey. This anniversary production, directed by Seán Linnen, promises to captivate a new generation of theatre-goers while delighting long-time fans of Bennett’s work.
Set in 1980s Sheffield at the fictional Cutlers’ Grammar School, the play follows eight bright, unruly sixth-form boys as they prepare for their A-levels under the guidance of their maverick English teacher, Hector (played by Simon Rouse), and the shrewd supply teacher, Irwin (Bill Milner). With their eyes set on gaining admission to Oxford and Cambridge, the boys navigate the complexities of adolescence, staffroom politics, and the pressures of academic achievement.
The new production features a talented cast, including Milo Twomey as the Headmaster and Gillian Bevan as Mrs. Lintott, the History teacher. The boys are portrayed by Archie Christoph-Allen, Lewis Cornay, Teddy Hinde, Yazdan Qafouri, Ned Costello, Mahesh Parmar, Tashinga Bepete, and Curtis Kemlo, with several cast members making their professional stage debuts.
Behind the scenes, the creative team brings a wealth of experience and innovation to this revival. Set and costume design are by Grace Smart, with lighting by Ryan Day and sound design by Russell Ditchfield. The production’s movement is directed by Chi-San Howard, and Eamonn O’Dwyer serves as the Musical Director.
Following its Bath run, The History Boys will tour the UK, with performances scheduled at esteemed venues including Hall For Cornwall, Nottingham Theatre Royal, Plymouth Theatre Royal, Cheltenham Everyman Theatre, Cambridge Arts Theatre, Coventry Belgrade Theatre, Malvern Theatre, His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen, and Richmond Theatre.
Alan Bennett’s legacy in British theatre is unquestionable, and this 20th anniversary production of The History Boys stands as a testament to his enduring relevance. Don’t miss the chance to experience this seminal work as it embarks on a new chapter in its storied history.
