Synergy Theatre Project has announced the full cast for its upcoming production of Lifers, a new play by Evan Placey, directed by Esther Baker.
The production runs from Wednesday 1st to Saturday 25th October at Southwark Playhouse Borough (The Large), with a press night scheduled for Monday 6 October at 7pm.
Joining the previously announced Peter Wight as Lenny are James Backway as Mark, Sam Cox as Norton, Ricky Fearon as Baxter, and Mona Goodwin as Sonya.
Lifers is a powerful and deeply human look at ageing behind bars. Inside the walls of HMP Drummond, Baxter, Norton and Lenny pass the time with poker, banter, and the kind of gallows humour only lifers can muster.
When Lenny’s body starts to give out, prison officer Mark keeps an eye on him. What begins as a duty of care slowly becomes an unexpected friendship, exposing the cracks in a system built to punish, not to support.
Darkly funny and unflinchingly honest, Lifers challenges what we think we know about crime, punishment, and redemption. Do some crimes make a second chance impossible? And when the world moves on without you, what does justice really mean?
The creative team includes designer Katy McPhee, costume designer Stella Cecil, lighting designer Tony Simpson, sound designer Sarah Weltman, and dramaturg Neil Grutchfield.
Esther Baker, Artistic Director of Synergy Theatre Project, directs the production. Synergy Theatre Project is an award-winning company working with prisoners and ex-prisoners, producing shows in theatres and within prisons, and delivering education and new writing initiatives.
Post-show events include a Q&A with the cast and creatives on Monday 13 October, and a panel discussion titled “Can dignity survive a life sentence?” on Monday 20 October.
