The National Theatre has announced the full cast for its upcoming production of The Misanthrope, which will run in the Lyttelton theatre from 16 June to 1 August 2026.
Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh makes her National Theatre debut in the central role of Alice, a reimagining of Molière’s misanthropic Alceste in Martin Crimp’s new version written in contemporary verse.
As previously announced, the cast includes Paul Chahidi as John and Abigail Cruttenden as Claire, alongside Sandra Oh as Alice.
Joining them are Imogen Elliott as Esmée, Rina Fatania as Indira, Freddie MacBruce as Allen, Tom Mison as Stefan and Jemima Rooper as Elaine.
Young performers Arthur Blanc and Teddy Holton-Frances share the role of Benjamin, while Francesca Fullilove and Poppy Townsend White alternate as Madeleine.
The understudy company includes Niamh James, Amira Matthews, Scott Sparrow, John Vernon and Gabby Wong.
The Misanthrope is directed by Indhu Rubasingham and explores 21st-century private relationships and public debate, following a brilliant novelist whose outspoken views lead to professional and personal fallout.
The creative team includes set and costume designer Robert Jones, lighting designer Tim Lutkin, composer Anna Meredith, sound designer Alexander Caplen, movement director Lucy Hind, casting directors Alastair Coomer CDG and Martin Poile CDG, voice coach Jeannette Nelson, associate director Gitika Buttoo and associate set and costume designer Ethan Cheek.
A press performance takes place on Tuesday 23 June 2026 at 7pm.
