The National Theatre has announced full casting for The Playboy of the Western World, a bold new revival of John Millington Synge’s classic Irish play.

Directed by Caitríona McLaughlin, Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre, this production will run in the Lyttelton Theatre from 4 December 2025 to 28 February 2026.

Previously announced cast members include Nicola Coughlan as Pegeen Mike, Éanna Hardwicke as Christy Mahon, and Siobhán McSweeney as Widow Quin.

They are joined by Declan Conlon as Old Mahon, Lorcan Cranitch as Michael Flaherty, Megan Cusack as Susan Brady, and Marty Rea as Shawn Keogh.

Completing the cast are Marty Breen as Sara Tansey, Naoise Dunbar as Jimmy Farrell, Matthew Forrest as Philly Cullen, Sallay Garnett as Nelly, Fionnuala Gygax as Honor Blake, and Erin Hennessey as Fiddle Player.

Susan Akintomide, Peter Mooney and Donncha O’Dea join the ensemble.

Set in rural County Mayo, The Playboy of the Western World tells the story of Christy Mahon, a young man who claims to have killed his father.

Rather than being condemned, Christy is celebrated by the villagers, turning into a local hero—until another man arrives and challenges his story.

The creative team includes set and costume designer Katie Davenport, lighting designer James Farncombe, movement director Sue Mythen, sound designer Adrienne Quartly, and composer Anna Mullarkey.

Fight direction is by Kevin McCurdy, with casting by Alastair Coomer CDG and Naomi Downham. Voice coach is Shereen Ibrahim, dialect coach Patricia Logue, and staff director Neetu Singh.
