The cast has been confirmed for the UK premiere of the seven-time Tony Award-nominated John Proctor is the Villain, written by Kimberly Belflower and directed by Tony Award-winner Danya Taymor.
The production transfers to the Royal Court following a sold out, critically acclaimed Broadway run. It will play from Friday 20 March to Saturday 25 April 2026, with a press night on Thursday 26 March.
This marks the third production in the theatre’s 70th anniversary season. The play offers a sharply funny reimagining of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, which premiered at the Royal Court in 1956, and follows five young women running on pop music, optimism and fury.
The full UK cast will include Lauryn Ajufo, Charlie Borg, Reece Braddock, Dónal Finn, Holly Howden Gilchrist, Clare Hughes, Miya James, Molly McFadden and Sadie Soverall.
Three of the company members are making their professional stage debuts in the production.
Scenography is by AMP featuring Teresa Williams, with costume design by Sarah Laux and lighting design by Natasha Katz. The sound design and original composition are by Palmer Hefferan.
Projection design is by Hannah Wasileski, and hair and make up are by J. Jared Janas.
Movement direction is by Tilly Evans Kreuger, with Gigi Buffington as voice and dialect coach and Julia Horan CDG as casting director.
Dramaturgy is by Lauren Halvorsen, while Yanni Ng joins as associate director.
‘One day, maybe, the new world we were promised will actually be new…’
The play explores girlhood, power and the narratives society is taught to accept, while five young women uncover dark secrets within their small town.
The production has partnered with Time Out to offer 2,000 tickets for under 35s at £25. The Royal Court will also continue its £15 Monday rush ticket scheme, with tickets released at 9am on the day of performance.
John Proctor is the Villain is presented by the Royal Court Theatre, Wagner Johnson Productions, Wessex Grove, Sonia Friedman Productions, Runyonland and John Mara Jr.
