Review: High Society at Barbican Theatre

Based on the bestselling manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note: The Musical features a score by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Jack Murphy with additional lyrics by Morgan Reilly, and a book by Ivan Menchell.

The musical tells the story of Light Yagami, a gifted student who discovers a mysterious notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written in it, setting off a gripping battle of wits with the enigmatic detective L.

Following sold-out productions across Asia and record-breaking concerts at the London Palladium in 2023, this newly reimagined staging features a revised script and new songs alongside the original score.

The production is directed by Stephen Whitson, with choreography by Fabian Aloise, set design by Jon Bausor, and musical supervision and orchestration by Jason Howland.

Death Note: The Musical runs at the Barbican Theatre from 30 July to 12 September 2026, with a press night on 11 August.
