Marking the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, The Flowers of Srebrenica arrives at Jacksons Lane this October as part of an international tour spanning Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Norway, and Italy.
Directed by Lara Parmiani and inspired by Aidan Hehir’s illustrated novel, the production blends physical theatre, devising, and animated projections to reimagine the journey of Aidan, a professor and Balkan expert from Ireland, on his first visit to Srebrenica.
A chorus of women storytellers—survivors and witnesses of war—frame the piece, drawing parallels with current global atrocities and challenging audiences to confront their complicity in historical violence.
At its core, The Flowers of Srebrenica explores the concept of memory. Is it a memorial, a grave, a photograph, or a survivor’s account? Or can memory become an act of solidarity, something collectively carried?
The cast includes Selma Alispahić (BiH), Taz Munyaneza (Rwanda/UK), Valeriia Poholsha (Ukraine/UK), Edin Suljić (BiH/UK), and Jeremiah O’Connor (Ireland/UK), with Cillian O’Donnchadha alternating in select international dates.
Director Lara Parmiani says, “Srebrenica is not just history, it is a warning. This show isn’t about speaking for Bosnia-Herzegovian. It’s about listening, honouring, and understanding how your story speaks to all of us. It is also about recognising our role as outsiders, and approaching the material with humility and respect.”
Produced by LegalAliens Theatre in collaboration with Sarajevo War Theatre SARTR and MESS Festival, the production continues LegalAliens’ mission to platform migrant and refugee voices through innovative and socially conscious theatre.
The Flowers of Srebrenica runs at Jacksons Lane from 14–18 October, with evening performances at 7.30pm and a Thursday matinee at 2pm. The running time is 65 minutes with no interval, and the show is suitable for ages 12+.
