Alicia Vilanculo stars in the world stage première of Babette Cole’s award-winning book Princess Smartypants.

Originally published in 1986, Princess Smartypants is a classic of feminist revisionism for children. It has now been translated into 32 languages and sold over a million copies worldwide.

Wayward is producing its first family show – adapting these charming yet subversive books for stage, in collaboration with The Wardrobe Ensemble.

The production opened at The Watermill Theatre, Newbury in April, before touring to The Wardrobe Theatre, Bristol, Arts Depot, Finchley and finishes its run this week at the Lyric Studio, Hammersmith.

You’re starring in Princess Smartypants on tour, what can you tell us about the show?

Princess Smartypants is a hilariously bonkers show full of heart about an independent Princess who is faced with the biggest decision of her life imposed by her parents… Marriage!

We follow her set impossible tasks for her potential suitors to complete as a way of proving they’re worth having her hand in marriage. They all fail miserably until Swashbuckle arrives…

Why do you think the original book has been such a powerful influence on children?

I think Babette Cole’s book speaks to children’s pure but crazy imagination and their sense of individuality. It’s an amazing story of how important it is to be true to yourself and live the life that you want. It’s got everything you want in a children’s book – a dragon for a best friend, a really cool motorbike and slugs!

And how well do you think it’s been adapted for the stage?

Our adaptation of the story is both rooted and ambitious which I believe speaks true to Wardrobe Ensemble’s style. It’s super engaging, funky and lots of fun.

What do you love most about the character of Princess Smartypants?

There are lots of things about Princess Smartypants that I adore. I love her cheeky, rebellious and care-free manner and I also admire her thoughtful, wise and warm heart which we see throughout the play.

What are you looking forward to most about performing this show to younger audiences?

Hearing their unfiltered reactions! From the very start of the show we establish a lovely relationship with our audiences. We want to hear they’re laughter, disgust and screams!!

What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see Princess Smartypants?

Our show has something for everyone! Catchy songs, ridiculous costumes and never-ending fart jokes perfect for families!
