You’re starring in Paddington The Musical at the Savoy Theatre, what can you tell us about the show?
I actually don’t want to reveal too much, as there’s something very special about an audience experiencing the magic of a brand new show for the first time.
What I will say is that it’s a show for all generations of the family and is being made with a huge amount of love, warmth, humour and kindness—something that Paddington Brown would definitely approve of!
Mrs Brown is such a beloved character, how have you approached bringing them to life on stage?
What a gift. It really is an honour for me to be entrusted with her.
I’ve re-read the first book by Michael Bond and, like many of us, have devoured all the films over the years with both Sally Hawkins and Emily Mortimer playing Mary Brown—both of whom I admire immensely and who play the role very differently from each other.
So in the same vein, this will be my own interpretation of Mary as well. I feel that with whatever character you’re playing, there are always going to be inevitable essences of yourself within them. All I ever try to do is play every role as truthfully as possible and to stay faithful to their individual journey within the story.
Paddington’s story is known for its warmth and humour. What’s the atmosphere like in rehearsals?
The atmosphere is joyous and utterly inspiring! I belly laugh and feel genuine support every day.
There are hundreds of people with so much talent and heart collaborating and creating our show to make it the best it can possibly be. All of us care a great deal about taking care of Paddington, his message and what he represents.
You’ve worked on a wide range of productions, how does Paddington The Musical compare to your previous roles?
I learn so much about myself with every role I’ve been fortunate enough to play. Each one is completely unique to the next so I honestly can’t compare.
I’ve been in my ‘Mum’ era for several years now as an actor and I’m loving every second. To be able to be a representative for all the maternal figures out there and tell their varied and important stories will always be a privilege for me.
What’s been your favourite moment so far in preparing for the show?
Can I admit it’s having marmalade on toast for breakfast every morning? There have to be some perks, right?!
What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see Paddington The Musical?
Our magical show truly has everything you could wish for—a beautiful score filled with earworms, a witty script, exquisite costumes, unbelievable lighting, set and sound designs, all set against the stunning backdrop of London.
Oh, and of course, a Bear. A Bear called Paddington. Like you’ve never seen him before.
So what are you waiting for?
