Interview: Ben Stock on Magical Merlin at The Fortune Theatre

“We didn’t envision him as a wizened old man, there’s no long beard or pointy hat..! He will hopefully be more contemporary and relevant to an audience of today”

Ben Stock

West End favourite Ben Stock plays the lead role of Merlin in the West End premiere of Magical Merlin this October half-term.

Magical Merlin is directed by the critically-acclaimed Kirk Jameson and also stars Stuart Maciver as Lancelot. They are joined by a talented line-up of Lydia Abbotts as Guinevere, Lizzie Buckingham as Morgan, Jordan Donnelly as Dustman, Farirayi Garaba as Swing and Claire Lee Shenfield as Mildred.

The spellbinding family musical, which promises to be full of fun and laughter, plays daytime performances at The Fortune Theatre in Covent Garden from Monday 24 to Sunday 30 October 2022.

You’re starring in Magical Merlin at the Fortune Theatre, what can you tell us about the show?

Firstly, it’s very much an ensemble piece – although I have the title role, I’m one of 8 extremely brilliant performers and each of us are bringing our own unique skills to the show.

We are working alongside the most incredible creative and technical teams to bring to life this new family musical which has fabulous songs, a great story, magic, comedy, gorgeous set, lighting and costumes, dance. There’s so much brilliant work going on in rehearsals…it’s really exciting!

What was it about the way Will Barnett had written Magical Merlin that made you want to be a part of it?

I was lucky enough to be in Will’s previous show Jungle Rumble and so when this was happening, I really wanted to be part of it. Will is the best at writing clear characters and brilliant “hummable” songs that will keep you singing for weeks! He also knows his audience and every scene takes you on its own journey.

What are you looking forward to most about playing such a well-loved character?

I think bringing something different along. We didn’t envision him as a wizened old man, there’s no long beard or pointy hat..! He will hopefully be more contemporary and relevant to an audience of today, whilst still retaining the wisdom we all expect and want to see from Merlin.

How have you been brushing up on your magic skills for the role?

Hahahaha! Trying! We have the brilliant Scott Penrose as Magic Consultant on the show. He’s an ex-President of The Magic Circle and has worked on countless productions (including the CATS film) so we are in safe hands…of course I’m sworn to secrecy on the details!

What makes this show perfect for families over half-term?

There’s something for everyone! From small kids to grandparents – it really is a family show.

What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see Magical Merlin?

Come!! We are doing 16 shows during the week, and we’re right in the heart of Covent Garden. If you have first-time theatregoers, it’s the perfect length and introduction to theatre for them – and there really is something for everyone…I only wish I could book to see it myself!
