Dominic Garfield

HighRise Theatre will blend Grime with theatre for a one-night-only livestream of Dominic Garfield’s acclaimed production Lil.Miss.Lady. Part rave, part drama, the event is a bass-pounding immersive experience, exploring the history and music of Britain’s biggest sub-culture, Grime.

Initially penned for a UK tour, following runs at The Roundhouse, Latitude Festival and HighTide Festival, HighRise’s fresh concept has been revitalised for this new era of digital theatre.

Lil.Miss.Lady streams Friday 23rd October 2020, 8pm Tickets are on sale here

You’re bringing us a digital production of your hit show Lil.Miss.Lady, what can you tell us about it?

We’re trying something new. Developing our practice further and creating an online world that offers a throwback to the birth of grime seen through the eyes of a fierce female MC.

What inspired you to blend drama and rave in this way?

I have been involved in raves and the grime scene for all my teenage and adult life. I am also a trained theatre maker, writer and director and knew I had to merge the two as soon as I had the opportunity to do so.

What surprised you the most about those interviews with influential women in the Grime scene?

The fact that they all had such intense experiences with men in the industry wasn’t surprising but definitely eye opening and made me rethink my relationship with the industry, its inhabitants and some of the lyrics.

How do you think an immersive production like this will translate to digital, and what challenges have you faced in making it happen?

Challenges are the restrictions with Covid but we’re not letting that bring us down. The tech is going to be a madness too, but again we’ve dealt with this s*** before. The translation is going to be interesting and is by no means anything but a test. How do we keep this exciting and interactive with audiences making choices and being offered unique opportunities to interact with characters throughout? It’d be easy to just offer a stream of a pre-recorded show but we’re going harder than that.

Tell us about the performers that will be involved and what we can expect from them?

Our lead is the formidable Lady Lykez, one of the most talented lyricists in the industry. This is a role like no other and the explosive energy she plays the role of Jayda with is unbelievable. DJ Kaylee Kay brings the fire every time. She is a grime connoisseur and has DJ’d for Eskimo Dance, BBC Radio 1Xtra and Boxpark. Kaylee plays the role of DJ Harmony, bringing constant vibes with an incredible song selection.

What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to watch Lil.Miss.Lady?

It’s gonna be big, it’s gonna be loud, and you will wanna shake a leg to the DJ talents of the icon DJ Kaylee Kay! A bespoke rave in your own front room to shake off the 2020 blues!
