You’re starring in Hito no Chikara – The Power of Human Strength at the Peacock Theatre. What can you tell us about the show?
This is YAMATO’s latest production, which we have been touring around the world over the past year. The theme comes from a simple but important question. As AI rapidly evolves and we hear terms like “singularity,” what will become of human beings in the future?
From that question, we began thinking about taiko itself. Perhaps one day robots or androids could hold drumsticks and perform perfectly synchronised rhythms. That might be fascinating in its own way. But even in such a world, we believe there must be something uniquely beautiful and compelling about being human. This show was created to explore that idea. That is why we called it The Power of Human Strength.
As a taiko drummer and founder of YAMATO Drummers, how does this production reflect the ethos and evolution of the company after more than 30 years of performing worldwide?
Over the past 30 years, we have created many productions, but the COVID period made us reflect deeply on our purpose and our existence. There were two years when we could not perform at all, yet here we are, still on stage today.
That experience led us to ask a very simple question: what is it that we can truly do? YAMATO is not about showing technical skill. We train our bodies every day and create everything ourselves, from a single drumstick to the entire stage. Everything comes from our body and spirit. With The Power of Human Strength, we want audiences to experience that philosophy directly. We simply play with all our energy, with the intention of giving strength to others. That is who we are.
The show explores what remains uniquely human in a technology-driven world. How is that idea expressed through taiko drumming, movement, and rhythm on stage?
In the end, human beings are made of two things: mind and body. Our performance is built on that combination. We train hard, but every day is different. Our emotions and physical condition can shift. There are moments of imperfection or weakness.
Through the exchange of energy with the audience, we become one and create the performance together. Within those two hours, there is a real sense of being alive. It is not perfect or overly polished, but that is exactly what makes it human.
Taiko is a centuries-old tradition, yet YAMATO are known for pushing physical and artistic boundaries. How do you balance honouring tradition with constant reinvention?
We do not consciously try to preserve tradition. What matters most is that we are alive now, and that we play the drums with our own lives. The taiko itself has a long history, and we respect that deeply.
But our focus is always on the drum in front of us, playing it with our whole body. As a result, the beauty of taiko is conveyed, and tradition naturally carries into the future. If we can serve as a bridge, that is enough.
The performances are often described as physically overwhelming and emotionally uplifting. What do you hope audiences feel in their bodies and hearts while watching this show?
Above all, we want audiences to feel the power of human strength. By experiencing the performance, we hope they realise that strength already exists within them. That energy lives in their body and spirit.
No matter how far technology advances, we believe the future is still created by human energy. That is the feeling we hope to share.
What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see Hito no Chikara – The Power of Human Strength?
Please come to the theatre with your energy. YAMATO is simply a group that plays large drums made of wood and skin, using bodies that we train every day. But to do that, we need energy, and that energy comes from your smiles, your voices, and your applause.
We will continue travelling the world to share energy. So first, bring yours to us. The power of human strength exists within you. We invite you to bring it and share it with us.
