Rambert has announced In Crimson, a striking new work by internationally celebrated director-choreographers Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber.
The production forms part of This Is Rambert, the company’s centenary programme, and marks the first Jerwood Commission in Rambert’s history.
In Crimson reimagines the duo’s acclaimed Fugue in Crimson for Rambert’s dancers, and will be the pair’s first work presented in the UK as well as their European premiere with the company.
Blurring the boundaries between stage and backstage, performer and spectator, the piece explores desire, intimacy and the tension between what is visible and what remains hidden.
Seven dancers perform in an emotionally charged environment, accompanied by an original live score by Yonatan Daskal.
The work completes the This Is Rambert triple bill, alongside Hop(e)storm by (LA)HORDE and Gallery of Consequence by Emma Evelein.
Rambert Artistic Director Benoit Swan Pouffer said: “I’ve followed Bobbi’s work for a long time and have always connected with its honesty and intensity. It’s bold, intimate and full of tension — and feels like a natural fit within This Is Rambert, alongside the other powerful voices in the programme. As we mark this great milestone, this is exactly the kind of work we want to be sharing.”
Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber added: “Seeing this work through the lens of the Rambert dancers has given it a new, electric life. There is a special soul in this company that mirrors the urgency of the work. To bring this piece to the UK for the first time with Rambert feels like the perfect collision of timing and spirit – it’s about the raw vulnerability of being seen and the beauty we find in the shadows.”
The production arrives as part of Rambert’s wider centenary celebrations, which include an ambitious touring programme and new projects continuing the company’s boundary-pushing approach to contemporary dance.
This Is Rambert will tour to Sadler’s Wells in London from 10 June, before visiting Newcastle Theatre Royal, Edinburgh Festival Theatre, The Lowry in Salford and Norwich Theatre Royal.
