Michael Dylan

Interview: Michael Dylan on The Time Machine

“When I first read the script I thought it was a big challenge for just three actors to inhabit all these different worlds, but from day one the three of us have been so close”

Michael Dylan stars in Original Theatre, in association with New Wolsey Theatre’s UK premiere of The Time Machine, a fast-paced and wise-cracking retelling of the world-famous novel by H.G. Wells, written by Steven Canny and John Nicholson.

Michael stars alongside Dave Hearn (founding member of the Olivier Award-winning Mischief Theatre) and Amy Revelle (Offside).

The Time Machine, directed by Orla O’Loughlin, will play New Wolsey Theatre from 23 February-4 March 2023, followed by a national tour visiting Derby Theatre (7-11 March), York Theatre Royal (14-18 March), Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne (21-25 March), Malvern Theatres (28 March-1 April), Octagon Theatre Bolton (12-22 April) and Theatre Royal Bath (24-29 April). Visit www.originaltheatre.com/our-productions/the-time-machine. for full listings and ticket information.

You’re starring in The Time Machine heading out on tour, what can you tell us about the show?

It’s a wild hilarious ride through time. Three actors decide to retell HG Wells classic story of The Time Machine but it does not always go according to plan. It’s ultimately a story of friendship and how when things get tough, these three have got each other’s backs.

What was it about Steven Canny and John Nicholson’s adaptation that made you want to be a part of this production?

Steven and John have written such an amazing script. It’s hilarious and heartfelt, it really is such a dream to perform. They have created so many possibilities and worlds within the script that we as actors get to play with, so many styles within our version of The Time Machine. It is just too much fun.

Do you have a favourite moment in the show yet?

I do have a favourite moment but I can’t give it away, it has to be seen to be believed. But to give you a little clue, let’s just say The Importance Of Being Earnest and the 90’s girl group B*witched have never felt so good together.

There’s just three of you in the cast, what do you think will be the biggest challenge in performing the show?

When I first read the script I thought it was a big challenge for just three actors to inhabit all these different worlds, but from day one the three of us have been so close, and have thrown ourselves into everything 100 per cent.

You have to with a show like this. It’s a massive undertaking. Amy Revelle and Dave Hearn are such great actors to be in the room with, we just play, explore and laugh every day. We also have the amazing Noah Marullo who is our understudy and he is brilliant. We all love this play and are up for the challenge.

What’s it been like working with the team from Original Theatre and what have you learnt from them?

Original are incredible to work for (of course I have to say that because they pay me, joking!!) From day one we have felt so looked after. Going on tour is a big thing especially after the pandemic, but Original’s main goal is to support everyone on the team and this level of care makes it a joy to come to work every day.

What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see The Time Machine?

You will not regret it. You are in for the ride of your life, so strap in 🙂
