Theatre Royal Bath Productions celebrates the 250th anniversary of Bath’s most beloved author with a sparkling new stage adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma.
Adapted by Ryan Craig and directed by Stephen Unwin, this witty comedy of manners launches at the historic Theatre Royal Bath from 11 to 20 September 2025, before embarking on a national tour.
“I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like,” wrote Austen of her spirited protagonist, Emma Woodhouse.
Emma is beautiful, clever, and rich—and determined never to marry. But she delights in matchmaking for her friends and neighbours, taking credit for the union of her former governess Miss Taylor and Mr Weston.
As Emma’s meddling intensifies, she finds herself entangled in a romantic web that may just catch her in its threads.
India Shaw-Smith stars as Emma, fresh from filming Spartacus: House of Usher. She is joined by Oscar Batterham, William Chubb, Jade Kennedy, Peter Losasso, Rose Quentin, Daniel Rainford, Ed Sayer, and Maiya Louise Thapar.
Also appearing are Jordan Kilshaw, Lukwesa Mwamba, Charlie Norton, Hugh Osborne, and Jordan Stamatiadis.
The production features set and costume design by Ceci Calf, lighting by Ben Ormerod, and assistant direction by Millie Gaston.
