The Donmar Warehouse has announced that Jodie McNee will join the cast of the world premiere production of Ilford Boy by Danny Lee Wynter.
McNee will play Jackie in the new production, directed by Donmar Artistic Director Tim Sheader. She replaces the previously announced Sinéad Matthews, who has withdrawn from the production to complete her recovery from a recent injury.
Ilford Boy opens on 20 October, with previews from 10 October, and runs until 28 November at the Donmar Warehouse.
The play follows mixed-race teenager Ted Martin as he grows up in 1990s East London in a home filled with “chaos, laughter and tough love”.
When Patrick enters Ted’s life, a new world begins to emerge, offering “art, possibility and people who see him clearly for the first time”.
Directed by Tim Sheader, Ilford Boy is described as “a funny, moving drama about the ghosts that follow us, the families we choose, and the Streisand that helps us survive.”
McNee returns to the Donmar Warehouse having previously appeared in the venue’s VR experience Adult Children. Her extensive stage credits include Fun Home, Nora: A Doll’s House, Hamlet, A Taste of Honey, Troilus and Cressida and The New Real, among many others. Her screen work includes The Marlow Murder Club, The Gathering, Britannia, Anthony and Official Secrets.
Joining McNee in the cast are Lindsey Coulson, Cary Crankson, Gershwyn Eustache Jnr, Aaron Gill, Charlotte Jaconelli, Craig Stein, Leo Whitfield-Harris and Ria Zmitrowicz.
The creative team includes set designer Peter McKintosh, costume designer Ryan Dawson Laight, lighting designer Aideen Malone, sound designer Tony Gayle, choreographer and intimacy director Ebony Molina, fight director Kate Waters, composer and music supervisor Eamonn O’Dwyer, WHAM designer Carole Hancock, voice director Barbara Houseman, dialect coach Hazel Holder, associate director Phillippe Cato, resident assistant director Jessy Roberts, casting director Lotte Hines CDG and casting associate Lilly Mackie.
