The National Youth Music Theatre marked its 50th anniversary with a landmark event at The Other Palace Theatre, celebrating five decades of transforming young lives through music theatre.
The event welcomed alumni, supporters and young performers, alongside distinguished guests including His Majesty The King and NYMT patron Sir Idris Elba.
Held on 14 May 2026, the celebration highlighted the organisation’s legacy while setting out an ambitious future focused on outreach and inclusion.
Central to the event was the announcement of the Idris Elba Bursary, designed to support talented young people who may otherwise be unable to access NYMT’s programmes.
The initiative was announced by NYMT company member Tochi Arinzi, who has herself benefited from bursary support.
The anniversary also marked 50 years of The King’s Trust, strengthening the connection between the organisations and their shared commitment to expanding opportunity for young people.
Adrian Packer, CEO of NYMT, said: “Reaching our 50th anniversary was a moment of real pride, but also one of reflection and renewed purpose. NYMT has always stood for excellence and opportunity, and this milestone gave us the chance to reaffirm those values. By choosing to invest in bursaries and outreach rather than a traditional celebration, we put young people at the centre of everything we do. Honouring Idris Elba in this way felt especially meaningful, given his journey and his continued commitment to opening doors for others.”
Sir Idris Elba said: “My experience with NYMT was a turning point in my life. I was given an opportunity through a Prince’s Trust bursary, and that changed my direction completely. It was incredibly special to see that legacy continue and to know that this new bursary will support the next generation. There are so many talented young people out there who just need access and belief. If this helps even a few of them take that first step, then it’s something I’m very proud to be part of.”
Jo Tyler, CEO of CORE Education Trust, said: “NYMT is an incredibly dynamic, outward facing youth arts charity. It has done so much to support so many of our students developing their creative skills but just as importantly, their confidence. Today’s announcement exemplified NYMT’s commitment to widening access so more of our students, students like Tochi, could thrive if they were given some support to access the incredible opportunities on offer.”
As part of its future plans, NYMT announced an expansion of its outreach work and bursary provision in partnership with The Garek Trust, alongside continued collaboration with CORE Education Trust.
Over the past five decades, NYMT has built a reputation as one of the UK’s leading youth arts organisations, with alumni going on to achieve success across theatre, film, television and music.
