National Youth Music Theatre has announced details of its 50th anniversary season, marking the milestone with an ambitious programme designed to celebrate both its history and the future of musical theatre in the UK.
More than 1,300 young people auditioned across 13 cities and 20 audition days, making this the largest response in the organisation’s history.
The 2026 season is themed around dreams, reflecting on five decades of artists nurtured by NYMT while looking ahead to the ambitions of the next generation.
The programme includes large scale musicals, new writing workshops, masterclasses and residential skills courses, offering opportunities across performance, music, design and technical theatre.
One of the landmark productions is The Ragged Child, the much-loved musical by Richard Taylor and Jeremy James Taylor, which returns to its original home after becoming one of the most frequently performed shows at the Rose Theatre.
The production features a cast of more than 50 young people and is co-directed by Jeremy James Taylor and Charley Harris, with musical direction by Nick Chave and Alex Miranda Diaz.
The Birmingham programme opens with West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents, presented with a cast of 40 performers and an orchestra of over 30 musicians at Birmingham Hippodrome.
The season also includes Just So by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, alongside the new musical Every Day by Martha Geelan and Nick Barstow, inspired by David Levithan’s novel and developed in collaboration with the performers.
Alongside the productions, NYMT will run New Musical Workshops and present GROWL The Reunion at the FUSE International Festival, celebrating its international partnership with Youth Theatre Kenya.
Artistic Director Chris Cuming said: “Dreams are often pushed aside for reality or practicality, but dreams are something we all have every day. They allow us to be brave, bold and ambitious in our thinking. For 50 years NYMT has brought new work to young people, helping them understand the power of storytelling while giving them the opportunity to perform on some of the country’s biggest stages. As we celebrate this milestone, we are also looking forward to the next 50 years. The youth voice will only continue to grow, and NYMT will be there to support it in whatever form that takes.”
