The world premiere of Nanny McPhee, a brand-new musical based on the beloved films written by and starring Emma Thompson, will open at London’s Aldwych Theatre, with performances beginning on 6 November 2027.

Tickets for the production will go on general sale from 12pm on 14 October 2026 via the show’s official website.

Featuring a book by Academy Award-winning actor and screenwriter Emma Thompson, music by singer-songwriter Gary Clark, and original lyrics by Thompson and Clark, the production marks the first time the magical world of Nanny McPhee will be brought to the stage.

Based on the Nurse Matilda stories by Christianna Brand and Edward Ardizzone, the musical follows the mysterious Nanny McPhee as she arrives at the chaotic Brown household, where a group of unruly children, a desperate father, an uncontrollable donkey and a troublesome baby have turned family life upside down.

Armed with her distinctive knobbly stick and a little magic, Nanny McPhee sets about restoring order, while teaching valuable lessons to every member of the family.

The original 2005 film, produced by Universal Pictures, Working Title Films and Three Strange Angels, starred Emma Thompson alongside Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, Kelly Macdonald, Imelda Staunton, Celia Imrie and Thomas Brodie-Sangster. Thompson later returned for the sequel Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang in 2010.

Casting for the stage production is yet to be announced, but a multi-award-winning creative team has already assembled. Katy Rudd, whose recent credits include Ballet Shoes and The Ocean at the End of the Lane, will direct.

Set and costume design comes from Rob Howell, with musical staging and choreography by Ellen Kane. The creative team also includes Simon Hale as orchestrator and arranger, Nigel Lilley as music supervisor and arranger, Howard Hudson as lighting designer, Ian Dickinson for Autograph as sound designer, Chris Fisher as illusion designer, Samuel Wyer as puppetry director, Andrzej Goulding as projection designer and Natalie Gallacher CDG as casting director.

The musical is presented by Universal Theatrical Group and Working Title Films in association with Studiocanal on Stage and MGM on Stage, and is produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Lindsay Doran, Emma Thompson, Paul Warwick Griffin, Gareth Hewitt Williams and Rebecca Quigley for Working Title Films.

The production is currently booking through to 9 September 2028.
