Operation Mincemeat will continue its international expansion with a new Australian production set to open at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre in September 2027.

The announcement was made simultaneously during curtain calls at the musical’s current productions in London, New York, Chicago and Norwich, with cast members across all four companies revealing Australia as the next destination for the award-winning show’s global tour.

The Australian production will become the fifth concurrent staging of Operation Mincemeat, joining the West End, Broadway, UK Tour and North American Tour. Further Australian cities are expected to be announced, with casting set to begin in early 2027.

The musical tells the extraordinary true story of the Second World War deception operation that helped turn the tide of the conflict. Set in 1943, it follows the audacious plan to use a stolen corpse carrying false intelligence to mislead Hitler and the Nazi regime.

Producer Jon Thoday of Avalon said: “It’s incredibly exciting to be invited to produce Operation Mincemeat in Australia and to be able to bring the show to a whole new audience. From its beginnings in a 77-seat London fringe theatre, the show is now playing simultaneously in the West End and on Broadway, with a world tour underway, so far spanning the UK and North America. Australia will be the fifth production of Operation Mincemeat and the next chapter in its extraordinary journey.”

The announcement marks another milestone in the remarkable rise of the musical, which began life at the New Diorama Theatre in 2019 before transferring to the West End and Broadway. The production is currently playing at the Fortune Theatre in London, where it has been extended until 29 May 2027.

According to the producers, Operation Mincemeat recently welcomed its largest audience to date when the North American tour launched at the Providence Performing Arts Center in Rhode Island, playing to a combined audience of 5,200 people across two performances.

The show’s popularity continues to grow internationally. Across its various productions, Operation Mincemeat has now played more than 2,000 performances and built a devoted fanbase affectionately known as “Mincefluencers”.

Written by SpitLip, comprising David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson and Zoë Roberts, and directed by Robert Hastie, the musical has received widespread acclaim since its premiere. It has earned 68 award nominations, winning 24, including Best New Musical at the Olivier Awards and Best Musical honours from several major theatre awards.

The production also enjoyed success on Broadway, receiving four Tony Award nominations in 2025, with Jak Malone winning Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance as Hester Leggatt.

Following Australia, the musical is scheduled to continue its world tour with future productions planned for New Zealand, China and Mexico.
